It is important to know that, unless you are detained in hospital (often called ‘sectioned’), under a community treatment order, or under a court order, you do have a choice about your treatment. You can choose whether medication or therapy is right for you.

Over the past decade, there have been significant developments in the number and type of treatments for people given a diagnosis of personality disorder. For many years, it was widely thought that it was not possible to successfully treat people given a PD diagnosis but this view has shifted as research has shown people can and do recover.
