Research at Emergence

Emergence is deeply committed to undertaking research into the needs and experiences of people with a diagnosis of personality disorder. Research is an important cornerstone of activity as it has such an important role in the development of understanding, services and treatments for people given a diagnosis of PD or experiencing the difficulties often associated with these diagnoses.

We are currently working in partnership with St. George's University and South West London and St. George’s Mental Health Trust on two research projects. 'Developing an understanding of recovery for people with personality disorder living in the community: a pilot narrative study' and 'Knowing what it means to care':  developing a National Carers’ Strategy for personality disorder'.

As a user-led organisation, with research experience and members across the country, we can provide advice and guidance, from a service user perspective, on any aspect of the research process.

We are also keen to encourage researchers to involve people with direct experience of PD as equal partners in research and can offer advice about how to integrate this into a research proposal.

Carrying out PD related research?

We are frequently approached by individuals and organisations carrying out research related to personality disorder and are happy to help, where this is appropriate.

Role of service users in research

Research has an increasingly important role in determining how people understand personality disorder (PD) and what services and treatments are available. This raises difficult questions about: what kinds of research are accepted as ‘good quality’; what is meant by ‘effective treatment’; who decides what areas are to be researched in the first place; and, crucially, whose voice is heard in the debates around these issues?

Emergence works to ensure that people given a diagnosis of PD, or experiencing the difficulties often associated with these diagnoses, have a voice in debates about research.

Collaborative research

We believe that people with direct personal experience of PD are experts by experience and trained staff and researchers are experts by training. Both sorts of expertise are equally valuable.

We encourage and support research which brings together people with different backgrounds, training and experience into an equal partnership.
